Makes it all worthwhile…

An email from my daughter this morning gave me a good feeling…

“Your name precedes me again!! I went to a CP conference yesterday and the health visitor recognised my name! She said she was the mum of ****, and how upset she was that you had retired before her daughter finished school. She said to tell you that **** is taking all Sciences and Maths at A Level and she thinks he got his love of science from you!! “:)

Now **** is a very bright lad, and I think that whether or not I had taught him for three years he would have become an excellent scientist, BUT I truly hope that amongst all the scientific concepts and skills he learned that I had a very small part to play in teaching him to love Science.

Those were the days! Look carefully and you might just spot a fleeting glimpse or two of me…

  1. That's a wonderful feeling! Maybe you just gave his inclinations a little push. I had an inspirational chemistry teacher at school too. Good luck to him! Pauline

    1. Thanks, Anne. It gave me a good feeling. Normally I wouldn't post about something personal like this. I think that I am finding it harder than I thought I would to leave my former job behind. I suspect that we all receive flashbacks to our past and even better if they are nice ones!!

  3. How wonderful! I don't think there can be a greater thing that to have been an inspirational teacher. Having read your blog for a while now, I am not at all surprised! My father was a teacher and it gave him enormous pleasure when he would hear from former students about how much he had inspired them.

    1. Thanks. This came at just the right time as I am finding it more difficult than I thought to adjust to retirement. What I miss is the daily interaction with all sorts of young people.

    2. I had an employer who regularly compimented me on a job well done...
it sends a buzz through your body when that happens.
I never work on my birthday...but on two occasions for him I made the exception!!.
      I think I know why!!!

  5. Brilliant...how good that must make you feel.... it is lovely isn't it, when you hear things like that. I just received a message from an American student I taught in 1984/5......he is 48 now ! he told me I had been like a breathe of fresh air in his quiet stuffy little mid west town....that made me feel great too !
I hope this post doesn't mean you are missing work too much..... ! Jxxx

    1. I think I'm missing contact with young people, and perhaps the idea of work and the structure which work provided, more than the work itself.
I don't doubt that retirement was the right thing.
I can see why you also got a 'warm fuzzy' from the comments of your past student. xx
