Roof update ....

Thursday saw me at work, Tim in Wrexham for some meetings, the roofers on our roof with our neighbour, Rory, down below supervising the job.

Here is a photograph of the repaired roof.

Tim has a couple of minor concerns about some gaps large enough for birds, and the lining up/join of a couple of tiles. The roof is over 150 years old, amazingly watertight with the timbers rot free. Luckily Rory had some spare tiles, and, although they haven't been able to keep the pattern exact, in that area of the roof it doesn't really matter.

What the experience has revealed is that some of the ridge tiles need to be re-seated. This weekend either Tim will be out buying the correct roof ladders ...... or perhaps we'll get the roofers back!

However, the main thing is that the hole is no more!

  1. What a relief! I'm glad you were able to get it done so quickly. I would get the roofers in if I were you - falling off a roof is bad news - look what happened to Nigel Pargiter!

  2. Glad that it seems to be fixed, hope that there are no leaks. You can see where the pattern has been changed slightly, but as you say it does not matter. My neighbour here in France lost his father with a fall from the roof - let the professionals do it!! Take care Diane

  3. Hello Gaynor:
Roofs can be such very tricky and expensive things so we are delighted to know that, in all probability, save for the re-seating of some ridge tiles [at which we can only guess] yours is set fair for the next 150 years. We do hope so.

  5. Well done. My husband is one of these who gets up on the roof, causing me to hold my breath many a time. The first job on getting down here in France saw him up there successfully repairing a hole that had been causing a very wet wall in our dining room -- a disgusting sight whenever we have returned for our summers. It's good advice about having roofers though and I'm hoping that once the 'old' man turns seventy next month he'll not be so quick to throw caution to the wind!

  6. Hi Jean,
I am an avid Archers listener so will take heed of your warning!

  7. Thanks for the advice Diane. It does make sense to get in the professionals, especially given the pitch of the roof and access.

    We hope so too!

  9. Hi Rhiannon,
Your Dad is booked to tile your kitchen floor tomorrow. I hope you've left him some bacon sandwiches!

He says that he is much better fed when he does jobs for you than he is at home. You can keep him!

  10. Hi Broad,
That's good going for a nearly 70 year old! I hope Tim remains as fit ...

  11. Good to see your roof has been fixed. Bad idea romping around on roofs! As Jean already said--think of the Archers'story line--get the professionals in for the ridge tiles.
