St Valentine's Day, a sign of the times...

I have a collection of Welsh love spoons, some of which were made by Tim over the 34 years since we first met.

Here are some which illustrate how times have changed, from wooden and hand carved to high tech.

1980s
1990s

2000s

The symbols have different meanings. If you would like to find out more and see how Tim made this white spoon check out this link...

  1. Hello Gaynor:
These are fascinating and it is most intriguing to note the changes in design and methods over such a period of time.

    1. Sometimes the design depended on how much time Tim had to complete the spoon. This depended on when he remembered!

  2. Well done Tim! Gaynor, these are beautiful... even the RP one... I have always been attracted by examples of treen and love spoons are a well known branch of the tree [oooo! sorry!]... I would never have the patience to complete these.

[Tim... wot iz RP? Is the brown picture a 3D CAD... and is the white a 3D printer version? And do the balls move?]

    1. Hi Tim, the brown spoon is indeed a computer generated image of the 3D CAD (PTC Creo Parametric) model.
RP stands for 'Rapid Prototyping' and more recently is being referred to as 3D printing.
The white spoon was created on a Dimension machine extruding very fine strands of ABS plastic building up the shape in layers. Think of it as a hot glue gun extruding plastic onto a base and building a shape from there.
It's ironic the process is called rapid as the spoon takes several hours to build and another hour to dissolve support material!
The balls do move and, along with chains, are the most difficult to carve in wood.

    1. I have quite a few more but I'm not really a collecting kind of person. Some(not any special ones) have been taken to the charity shop.
