May Day in Le Touquet…

Recently I spent a week in Normandy, in the company of 56 Y8 pupils. Although the weather wasn’t particularly good we had a wonderful time.

IMG_8923 Lily of the valley was on sale everywhere.

It was a pity that May Day was wet,  as we were to spend the morning at the market in Le Touquet. I spent most of my time in the cloisters, fascinated by the produce on offer, but also amazed by the Le Touquet prices.

All of the above produce is rather predictable for an up-market, market.

What surprised me was the stall selling Welsh cheeses and preserves.

What amazed me was what I am sure was a British-run stall selling cakes. The prices were sky high and the produce not particularly appetising. The Loire Valley Clandestine Cake Club could give her a run for her money! Judge for yourself.

Would you pay 12 Euros for that carrot cake, or 2,80 Euros for an untidy cupcake?

  1. Hello Gaynor,

Well, how extraordinary! Usually local markets are just that.....local. The produce for sale looks rather more of a tourist attraction than a proper market for real people to do their daily shopping at.

We agree with you about the cakes. They look delirious rather than delicious and the expense! Surely, there would be no buyers at these prices.

  2. Really rather comical, Gaynor! I think the French stuff looks delicious and would love a market like that here! However, that carrot cake is derisible...what were they thinking. You should have complained to the market management to explain that the cake stall was not representative of good English (or Welsh!) cake making!

  4. Hello Gaynor , I am truly surprised too!! Not desirable at all , and so expensive. No I would not buy them even at lower prices. NOt sure what they were thinking , !!

We have not been to Le Touquet for years but we loved it . Stayed in a b and b in the forest and had bikes to use. We also hired a car and was there for a week.

  5. Its not going to be long now before your French posts will all be due to you being in France for you.....and not for a group of students, however delightful they may be. Great photos Gaynor....and an absolutely rubbish carrot cake ! Enjoy every minute of your last few weeks. Jxxx

  6. Touquet is the holiday home of all the Parisians so the prices are probably what they are used to!! It is exceptionally pretty at Christmas when all the lights are up. Take care Diane
