What a waspper…

This active nest was spotted in a tree on the roadside, as we drove down the hill into Preuilly sur Claise.

The falling of the autumn leaves has obviously made it more visible.

  1. Oh crikey! That's an Asian Hornet nest. They are often discovered only in the autumn when the leaves drop and the nest becomes visible. I hope someone's reported it. Let me know exactly where it is and I will do so. Also of course, I want to take some photos for myself.

    1. Have sent you an email with more precise location, but it's on the left as you walk/drive up the hill out of Preuilly towards the garage at the top.
We spotted it as we drove past and turned to photograph it.

  3. Evil things.. We attempted to stop one taking bees off our sedum last month... Personally I would not like to take on the task of getting rid of it... It looks a bit big!!

  4. I believe the Pompier will get rid of Asian hornets. Far too scary for me x

    1. No, the pompiers no longer deal with wasp / hornet nests. There is a list of approved pest controllers who are contracted to do it.

  5. Good gawd!... it's HUGE!!
I knew they built big nests but had only ever seen chunks in displays...
or close-ups like your second picture...
but the first, with the shed and the whole tree to give scale...
    I'm not a celebrity... I'm outa here!!
Careful Susan... just use the long focus... NO LADDERS!!

    1. We only had my little camera with us so I'd be interested in seeing more detailed pics.

  8. Amazing structures - we've had a few in our garden. If it weren't for the wasps that live there, I'd love these things a lot more! But you have to admire them. Axxx
