Why it is that the Government think people who earn hundreds of thousand pounds a year and more need the incentive and motivation to work hard and not avoid paying tax, whereas people on far less are told that since we are all in this together we must all pay more?
Lower rate threshold moved up, higher rate threshold moved down, top rate of tax lowered. Sounds like a squeezed middle to me.
This isn’t meant to be a political statement and I don’t want to lose any friends. I’m sure that whatever colour the Government there were painful decisions to be taken.
We all want to be rid of benefit cheats and tax dodgers, but we shouldn't demonise people in receipt of benefits nor higher earners.
Sometimes I wonder whether we really are all in this together …

Hello Gaynor:
ReplyDeleteNo,of course, we are not all in this together. What is becoming very apparent to us is that the poor are becoming ever poorer and more disenfranchised. This is, in our view, not only morally unacceptable but also a threat to social stability. Where will it all end?
I really don't know. more and more it seems to be a case of 'divide and rule'.
DeleteThe people in the middle are being squeezed because we're the only ones who have too much to lose to give it all up but not enough to be able to dodge our way out of it. We're the only ones keeping the damn country afloat.
ReplyDeleteWell said, Jean!
DeleteI do not think that there is an easy answer to the current problems. The government are damned if they do and damned of they don't at the moment.
ReplyDeleteI agree there isn't an easy answer, but perhaps there is a fairer one?
DeleteWhen squeezed some of us went POP!
ReplyDeleteWe couldn't afford to live like we do here back in Blighty!
I didn't vote the Tories in... over the years, I have voted for almost every political party because I vote for the person and their attitude/beliefs not their politics... strangely enough the "almost" doesn't include a Tory, nor a National Front candidate nor anyone on the extreme left.
I wonder why?!!
It's a minefield out there! What I hate more than anything is the smugness with which these policies are delivered.
DeleteOh we are in it all together all right ... It's just that some are more together than most!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more, Broad
Delete:( We feel far less pressure living here than if we were in the UK, even though the cost of living has also rocketed here since we arrived 8 years ago!
ReplyDeleteIt makes me wonder how people on very low incomes survive!
DeleteI couldn't agree more, Broad!
ReplyDeleteA citizen concerned about policies and laws would never offend me. We should be thinking for ourselves and not just believing what "Politicans" say is good for us. I like your post.
ReplyDeleteHi Charlotte,
ReplyDeleteThanks. I suppose that I am in a very fortunate position in that when our budget is squeezed we perhaps get to have fewer luxuries. For others the squeeze means that families go without essentials.
I have to say we were quite pleased that we are out of there!! Diane
