First snows...

When we had our apartment in the Haute Savoie we were used to snow falls at October half term and even in early June. I don't ever remember there being snow on the journey through northern France at those times.
As we were travelling south to Le Pre Vert very early on Saturday morning it was raining heavily. Suddenly, around Rouen, the driving rain turned first to sleet and then to snow. This continued for around 80 km.

Then, as weather conditions have a habit of doing, the weather changed to a bright, sunny although nippy day.

Of course, it's all relative, and nothing in comparison with the pounding the east coast of the USA, and before this the Caribbean has been subjected to by hurricane, now superstorm Sandy.

Looks like there'll be a lot clearing up to do. We've been watching CNN as a number of Tim's colleagues live and work in this area. Let's hope that as the storm moves on and day breaks the devastation and loss of life is less than first feared.

  1. When I read the title, I looked out of the window again.... just to check that it was JUST frost out there.
I like the A28 as a road, but I would not have liked to have been driving in that... very glad you got here without mishap!

    1. I think the high and cold siberian wind added to the 'freezing' nature of the sleet/snow.

    1. I quite like snow - in the right place at the right time. We are heading for the slopes at Christmas so I'll be very disappointed if we don't get rather a lot of the white stuff!!

Not too much on the journey, though...

  3. We had a sprinkling of snow overnight on Friday, too. Fortunately by 8am Saturday it had gone. This is just way too early, but I do remember a heavy snowfall here in early November once. Groan.....

We have also been caught out a few times on that stretch of motorway in northern France. Driving in it is very scary but it's usually better once you get south of Le Mans.

But as you say, what do we have to worry about, compared to those on the other side of the pond.

  4. Hi Jean,

About 20 years ago we had a heavy fall in Staffordshire on November 6th. A postponed parents evening marked the date for me..

  5. Seems bizarre to have such snowy conditions so early in the season! And yet freak weather conditions seem to very much a part of life - something that seems difficult for us to deal with sometimes. Sandy is one impressive hurricane - do hope it blows itself out very soon without too much severe damage. Very scary.

  6. The weather seems very odd this year, we had butterflies in the garden last year in November!

I have just spoken to friends who live in Delaware and he says that the eye of the storm Sandy passed right over the top of them. It is now windy and raining but they are feeling very relieved that all is well.

    Keep warm Diane

  7. That first photo is worrying, this early in the winter season. My brother is working in New York at the moment....staying in a hotel in lower Manhattan....so hoping to hear that he's ok soon. Its scary stuff. Hope the rest of your week enables you to enjoy some more normal October weather patterns.J.

    1. Hi Janice,

Hope your brother is OK and not affected too much by Sandy.

Weather today is an azure cloudless sky with brilliant sunshine. Hope it's good in Hebden Bridge, too

  8. We have driven past that Evreux/Lisieux sign several times, but never in the snow. We must be living in a hot spot here, as we have yet to have a frost.

    1. I think it was due to the freak conditions of the freezing winds from Siberia causing the driving rain to freeze.

It's a hot spot here (in the day) although frosty at night.

  9. We travelled that road many a time...but I wouldn't fancy it in those conditions, particularly on the bit down to Sees.

    1. Fortunately everyone was driving with care which made it all slightly less hazardous.
