J Day +11 Onomichi to Imabari...

Tim and Tom are cycling the 70km across the islands from Onomichi to Imabari. I have the arduous task of driving the support vehicle!

The U2 Hotel Cycle in Onomichi...

Collecting the bikes...

Just before they set off...

I'll be sure to update with pics of the sights along the route and especially of how they look at the end!!!

  1. Rather them than me... Cycles and me don't mix, I have tried but my legs just don't have the power... As a youth I went everywhere by bike!! Strange, maybe I burned out!!
I have noticed from some of your photos that they wear masks quite a bit, is the air that bad or is it a germ fetish? C

  2. I don't think it is a dirty air problem, more one of germs; either catching them or spreading them! We noticed that as soon as we got on the plane quite a few Japanese people put their masks on and kept them on all flight unless they were eating.

Quite a few children wear a mask to walk to and from school and people are used to talking with their masks on too.

We haven't tried one but I think they could cause irritation.

  3. I love the bridge! I have a thing about bridges and that one is wonderful! How do find the driving in Japan? Are the roads terribly crowded? Lots of people in Korea wear masks -- mostly women, I would say.

    1. All of the roads we've travelled on with the exception of those in a city have been virtually empty and not at all crowded or busy. The bridges were very quiet.

However in the next few days we will be heading up towards Tokyo, and Mt Fuji and are expecting it to be more crowded. We are mostly travelling outside of Japanese holiday periods so that might make a difference, as does the fact that the rail network is extensive.

  4. What a wonderful route! Same bikes all over the world, I notice.

    1. They reached the end of the route very happy anf fulfilled. Tom is a keen road cyclist often taking part in races so it was an easy training run for him. Tim was exhausted, but able to keep up!

As a keen cyclist I'm sure you would love it, Rosemary. You can extend the distance by taking loops around each island .

  5. I am full of admiration of both of them for even attempting it, but especially Tim, what a way to prove that even though he's "passed go" he's not a has been!
